According to Financial News, the sci-fi film “Project Hail Mary” has climbed to the top of the daily box office, pushing aside “The King’s Warden.”
According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on the 4th, “Project Hail Mary,” starring Ryan Gosling, drew about 58,000 moviegoers the previous day, capturing 37.8% of total ticket sales and taking first place at the box office.
This is the first time “Project Hail Mary” has topped the daily box office since its release on the 18th of last month. Its cumulative audience has risen to about 1.364 million viewers.
“Project Hail Mary” follows middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling), who is sent into space to save humanity from an apocalyptic crisis and ends up working with an unexpected being named Rocky to solve the problem. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, author of “The Martian” and “Artemis.”
The movie has been praised for its stunning space visuals and moving storyline. Its Egg Index, CJ CGV’s audience rating score based on actual viewer reviews, stands at a high 97%.
Director Jang Hang-jun’s film “The King’s Warden” slipped to second place, attracting about 52,000 viewers (29.4%) on the same day.
This is the first time “The King’s Warden” has ceded the top spot on the daily box office in 51 days, since the release of “Humint” on February 11. Compared with the previous Friday (March 27), when it drew about 98,000 viewers, its audience has nearly halved.
The film, which depicts Danjong of Joseon forming friendships with the village head and other locals in his place of exile, has become a box-office sensation. It has surpassed “Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds” (2017, 14.41 million viewers) to rank third in all-time admissions.
As of the previous day, its cumulative audience stood at about 15.783 million viewers, just around 390,000 short of second-place “Extreme Job” (2019, 16.26 million).
