According to The Financial News, several members of a group that carried out repeated "revenge-for-hire" crimes—such as throwing filth on front doors and leaving abusive graffiti on walls at victims’ homes—have been handed over to prosecutors while under arrest.
Police said on the 2nd that Seoul Yangcheon Police Station on Tuesday morning sent a man in his 40s, identified only as A, who posed as a "fake employment counselor," and his superior, a man in his 30s identified as B, to the prosecution in custody. They are accused of violating the Information and Communications Network Act, housebreaking, property damage and intimidation.
The two are suspected of repeatedly carrying out attacks in various locations, including throwing feces at the entrance of an apartment building in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, in January, as well as spraying lacquer and scrawling abusive graffiti.
Investigators found that the group’s ringleader, a man in his 30s surnamed Jung, received requests for revenge attacks from an unspecified number of people via Telegram.
They also determined that Jung had A get a job as a counselor, under false pretenses, at an outsourcing contractor for Baedal Minjok (Baemin), and that A then repeatedly stole the personal data of intended targets.
While investigating C, a man in his 30s who acted as an enforcer, police discovered that Baemin customer information had been used to verify the home addresses of intended victims. They then raided the company’s office and, by widening the investigation, arrested all four members of the group, including A, B and Jung.
C was sent to the prosecution in custody in January, while A, B and Jung were arrested between March 26 and 28.
Regarding Jung, who was the last to be arrested, police stated, "We still have time before the detention deadline, so we plan to refer him to prosecutors after conducting additional questioning."
