In a meeting held that afternoon in the reception room of the main building at Cheong Wa Dae, President Lee received Ami Bera, Ryan Zinke, Mark Pocan, Mary Gay Scanlon, Jill Tokuda, Pat Harrigan and other members of the delegation of U.S. House Representatives. He said, "The entire world is now in a very complex and difficult situation, and I would like to express my gratitude, on behalf of the people, for the interest you are showing in Korea."
President Lee stated, "I highly value the fact that the United States Congress has taken an interest in Korean affairs and has even carried out dedicated research, and I believe this will greatly help the development of South Korea–United States relations." He went on to say, "South Korea–United States relations have been developing in a much broader and deeper way than before, including through two summits with President Donald Trump last year."
He also recalled, "We have not forgotten the significant contribution the United States of America (US) has made to the development of the ROK, including during the Korean War." He added, "Going forward, the ROK will also pay close attention to the revitalization of U.S. manufacturing and the expansion of the U.S. role, and we will strive to do our utmost together."
He continued, "We have a very strong interest in the stable development of South Korea–United States relations," and expressed his expectations by saying, "We look forward to the U.S. government, including President Donald Trump, playing a major role in issues of peace and stability in Northeast Asia in the future."
Attending the meeting from the U.S. side were Representative Ami Bera (Democrat, California), Representative Ryan Zinke (Republican, Montana), Representative Mark Pocan (Democrat, Wisconsin), Representative Mary Gay Scanlon (Democrat, Pennsylvania), Representative Jill Tokuda (Democrat, Hawaii), Representative Pat Harrigan (Republican, North Carolina), and Abraham Kim, president of The Korea Society.
