Daegu – Kim Jang-uk of The Financial News – "I will listen. I will serve the citizens of Daegu as my masters."
On the 30th, former Prime Minister of South Korea Kim Boo-kyum formally declared his candidacy for Mayor of Daegu in the June 3 local elections, saying, "Daegu needs someone like me right now. Please give Kim Boo-kyum a chance."
At a campaign announcement held that afternoon at February 28th Central Memorial Park, Kim stated, "Daegu is the city that raised me," adding in a strong voice, "When I was growing up, Daegu was my pride. Shouldn’t we make sure our sons and daughters can feel that same pride?"
Calling his decision "something I am doing for my children," he said, "What wouldn’t parents do for their children?" He then stressed, "I will devote every last drop of Kim Boo-kyum’s sweat to Daegu."
Kim argued, "To revive Daegu’s economy, we must first change Daegu’s politics," and went on, "It is like boxing with only one arm, or playing soccer with only one leg. Now let’s use both arms and both legs."
He said, "The true owners of politics are the citizens, and politicians are their servants," then criticized, "Yet the People Power Party (PPP) does not seem to fear the citizens of Daegu."
He pointed out, "They normally show no interest in Daegu’s economy, but whenever something happens, they show up at Seomun Market. They only come to Daegu when they need something."
Kim concluded, "This mayoral election in Daegu is the last chance for the city to breathe again," and reiterated, "I will take full responsibility for completing the Daegu–North Gyeongsang administrative integration, the relocation of the integrated civil-military airport, resolving the water intake source issue, the second phase of public institution relocation, and restructuring the industrial base."
He added, "This is my fifth election in Daegu. I am not a fighter; I am a worker," and continued, "Together with the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) candidates, we will show the citizens of Daegu our sincere commitment. With one heart and one mind, we will charge straight ahead for the revival of Daegu."
