Financial News reported that Nexon will take charge of operating the Korean service for Overwatch, a flagship IP of global game company Blizzard. Blizzard plans to work with Nexon to strengthen its presence in the Korean market through services and content tailored to local players.
Blizzard Entertainment and Nexon announced on the 30th that they have signed a publishing agreement for the PC version of Overwatch in Korea, with the goal of launching the service within this year.
Since its launch in 2016, Overwatch has been one of Blizzard’s leading franchises, loved by players around the world for its distinctive heroes and fast, strategic gameplay. In February, Blizzard used its Overwatch Spotlight showcase to declare the start of a new era for the game, unveiling a year-long, full-length story arc and five new heroes, and revealing plans to introduce an additional five heroes within the year.
Under this partnership, Nexon will handle domestic publishing for the PC version of Overwatch and will roll out live services and business operations tailored to the Korean market within the year. Blizzard will provide the Overwatch IP and continue to lead overall game development.
Building on close collaboration, the two companies plan to introduce hyper-localized content customized for Korean players and expand the PC bang ecosystem, further strengthening the Overwatch service in Korea.
Johanna Faries, President of Blizzard Entertainment, said, "Korean players have long been an important part of Blizzard’s global community, and their passion has been instrumental in shaping Overwatch in meaningful ways." She added, "We are excited to partner with Nexon, which is widely known for its deep understanding of the Korean market and outstanding live service expertise, so that we can continue delivering exciting and dynamic experiences to players."
Nexon Korea co-CEOs Kang Dae-hyun and Kim Jung-wook stated, "By combining Blizzard Entertainment’s exceptional development capabilities with Nexon’s live service expertise, we will deliver optimized Overwatch content and an even more enhanced service experience for Korean players."
