[Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung on the 29th paid his respects at the Jeju April 3rd Peace Park ahead of the 78th anniversary of the Jeju April 3 Incident.
President Lee visited the Jeju April 3rd Peace Park in Bonggae-dong, Jeju City that day to commemorate the victims.
In the park’s guest book, President Lee wrote, "Remembering the Jeju April 3 Incident, we will abolish civil and criminal statutes of limitations to prevent the recurrence of state violence."
Before visiting the April 3rd Peace Park, President Lee wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account, "Stripping medals and decorations from perpetrators of the worst forms of state violence—such as torture, fabricated cases, and judicial killings—comes far too late, but it is the right thing to do," adding, "We will also make sure to push for legislation to exclude criminal statutes of limitations and civil prescription periods for state-violence crimes."
He went on to say, "I pray for the souls of those who, without even knowing why, were stabbed with spears, shot with carbines, and buried alive," and pledged, "We will ensure that such a tragedy never again occurs in the Republic of Korea (ROK)."
President Lee is scheduled to hold a town hall meeting in Jeju on the 30th, and he visited the Jeju April 3rd Peace Park a day early to pay tribute to the victims. His visit is seen as a prior commemoration arranged in light of his unavoidable summit schedule. On April 2–3, President Lee is set to hold a summit and related events with French President Emmanuel Macron, who will visit South Korea on a state visit.
