Financial News reported on the 27th, citing Tasnim News Agency, that if the Islamic Republic of Iran were to impose transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, it could generate more than $100 billion a year in revenue, equivalent to about 150 trillion won.
The outlet presented two scenarios regarding a potential "Hormuz transit fee." The first would charge about $2 million per vessel as a "special security service" fee. Based on the fact that an average of 140 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz each day before the war, it estimated that annual revenue from such fees would exceed $100 billion. This would amount to roughly 20–25% of Iran's nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The second scenario would still impose a transit fee, but benchmark existing international cases such as tolls for the Suez Canal and Panama Canal, charging an average of about $400,000 per ship. Tasnim News Agency reported that on an annual basis, this approach is projected to generate between $20 billion and $25 billion, or roughly 30 trillion to 38 trillion won.
Iran does not currently impose an official transit fee for the Strait of Hormuz. However, media reports have cited cases in which some vessels paid around $2 million per ship to pass through the strait.
Fars News Agency reported on the 25th that the Iranian parliament (Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran) is refining a draft bill to collect transit fees from ships in return for providing security in the Strait of Hormuz, and that a final version is expected next week.
In an interview with India Today on the 25th, Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, "Iran will definitely impose a fee on other countries and ships for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz," adding, "A series of measures for transiting the strait is being implemented because of the war situation imposed on Iran."
