According to The Financial News, President Lee Jae Myung on the 27th presided over the first Meeting of Major Commanders of the Armed Forces since the launch of the Government of the People. He reviewed major security issues, including the situation in the Middle East and support for protecting Korean nationals overseas, strengthening the readiness and capabilities of Korea’s three-axis system against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, and managing military conditions in border areas.
Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated that President Lee convened the Meeting of Major Commanders of the Armed Forces by summoning key officials from the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Korea, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), each service branch, and related defense agencies. The meeting was attended by more than 150 senior officers and key officials, including Minister of National Defense Ahn Gyu-back and JCS Chairman Jin Young-seung. Key commanders responsible for current operations and the heads of overseas deployment units participated via video link.
At the meeting, President Lee first received a briefing from Minister Ahn on the security situation at home and abroad, including developments in the Middle East and neighboring countries. He then reviewed overall matters such as the activities of the armed forces, the implementation of his command guidance, and the progress of major defense policies.
In particular, the meeting focused on several core defense issues, including support for protecting Korean nationals in the Middle East, achieving self-reliant defense, stable management of the military situation in border areas, and rebuilding the people’s armed forces. The participants also concentrated on strengthening the readiness and capabilities of Korea’s three-axis system against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, as well as enhancing capabilities in light of recent patterns of warfare and lessons learned from recent wars.
After the briefings and discussions, President Lee urged the participants to transform the armed forces into a high-tech, strong military capable of achieving self-reliance under any circumstances. He also checked on the safety of troops on the ground by speaking via video with the commanders of the Dongmyeong Unit, the Cheonghae Unit, and the Akh Unit, who were attending the meeting remotely.
After the meeting, President Lee visited the underground Command and Control Center to encourage the personnel on duty. During the visit, he met and shook hands with Colonel Cho Sung-hyun, who served as commander of the 1st Security Group of the Capital Defense Command during the December 3 Rebellion and ordered that forces not cross Seogang Bridge.
