According to The Financial News, United Airlines plans to sell an option that allows passengers to use three adjoining economy seats like a bed.
On the 24th local time, United Airlines announced that it will introduce a service called "Relax Row," which connects three economy seats so they can be used as a bed.
Relax Row is configured so that three economy seats can be used as a single space and converted into a sofa-like area. The leg rests can be raised up to 90 degrees, allowing passengers to lie down to rest or sleep.
The service is scheduled to launch in 2027 and is expected to be expanded to more than 200 long-haul aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Boeing 777 jets, by 2030. The airline plans to install about 12 Relax Row seats in the section between economy and premium economy cabins.
Passengers using the service will receive a dedicated mattress pad, a blanket, and two pillows.
United Airlines explained that it is "a service designed to improve comfort for families traveling with young children, couples, and long-haul travelers."
Many online users welcomed the news of the new seating option. Commenters wrote, "This could make long-haul flights a bit less stressful" and "It would be the best option when traveling with a child."
However, some were skeptical, asking, "What happens if the passenger in front reclines their seat?", "If you have to lie down and get up again every time drinks or meals are served, it might actually be more of a hassle," and "In the end, it all comes down to the price."
