According to The Financial News, there is growing speculation that Donald Trump may soon enter cease-fire talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran. At the same time, however, he is maintaining pressure by deploying about 2,000 troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army (U.S. Army) to the Middle East.
On the 25th, The New York Times (NYT) reported that the United States Department of Defense (DoD) issued this order to give Trump additional military options. The troops being moved were drawn from the Global Response Force (GRF), the core rapid-deployment element of the 82nd Airborne Division.
The Middle East-bound contingent is being led in person by Major General Brandon Tegtmeier, commander of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. The force consists of several dozen staff officers and two battalions of roughly 800 soldiers each.
The GRF under the 82nd Airborne Division, totaling about 3,000 troops, is capable of deploying to any location in the world within 18 hours.
Earlier, Cable News Network (CNN) reported that Trump had approved the deployment of more than 1,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, adding that they could arrive in the region "within the next few days."
The 82nd Airborne Division showed a similar posture in 2020, during Trump’s first term, immediately after Qasem Soleimani of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed by U.S. forces.
Since then, the division has been deployed for the 2021 withdrawal operation from Afghanistan and to help bolster the defense of the Eastern European front just before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Currently, nearly 5,000 troops from two Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) formations are sailing toward the Middle East on warships. With the additional deployment of 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, the number of U.S. ground troops moving into the region has risen to about 7,000.
NYT noted that this buildup could push the conflict into a new and more intense phase.
Kharg Island, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s key crude oil export hub, is being widely discussed as the most likely target for an airborne insertion by the 82nd Airborne Division.
Trump is reportedly considering a plan to seize Kharg Island, through which about 90% of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s oil exports pass, in order to break any blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on the 14th that it had struck more than 90 military facilities on the island. On the 19th, Trump declared, "If we want to, we can wipe that island off the map at any time."
On the same day, Trump said he had received a "very big gift" from the Islamic Republic of Iran, hinting at progress toward cease-fire talks, even as he simultaneously appears to be preparing for a large-scale ground deployment.
