[The Financial News] Prosecutors have requested a 26-year prison sentence for a man in his 20s who fatally stabbed his mother in her 70s with a weapon.
According to the legal community on the 24th, at a sentencing hearing in the case against A, who is charged with parricide (killing his parent), before Criminal Division 13 of the Suwon District Court, presided over by Chief Judge Jang Seok-jun of the Suwon District Court Criminal Division 13, the prosecutor requested this prison term. The prosecution also sought an order for treatment and custody and the attachment of an electronic monitoring device.
In the closing argument, the defense stated, "This case is not a light matter. However, the defendant admits his wrongdoing and suffers from a borderline intellectual disability and schizophrenia," adding, "Please consider an order for treatment and custody so that the defendant can receive proper medical care, and grant him the most lenient sentence permitted by law."
In his final statement, A said, "I struggle with schizophrenia every day. I will do my best to ensure that something like this never happens again."
The incident occurred at around 10 p.m. on November 22 last year at an apartment in Giheung-gu, Yongin-si. A was indicted on charges of repeatedly stabbing his mother, B, who was in her 70s, with a weapon and killing her. B sustained severe injuries to her head and arm, was taken to a hospital, but ultimately died.
After the crime, A left the home barefoot and wandered the streets before being arrested by police who responded to a report, roughly 20 minutes later. It was reported that he also suffered serious injuries to his hand during the offense and underwent surgery.
A was reportedly living with his parents at the home where the incident took place. The sentencing hearing for A is scheduled for April 16.
