[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung on the 24th raised the idea of easing congestion on public transportation during commuting hours, saying, "Please study whether we can limit free public transportation for senior citizens only during peak commuting hours, for one or two hours, when office workers are going to and from work."
During the 11th meeting of the State Council of South Korea, while discussing ways to expand support for public transportation use, Lee noted, "When everything is concentrated in commuting hours, even if we encourage people to use public transportation, it becomes too burdensome," adding, "It is hard to actively promote it under those conditions, so let us study ways to spread out the demand." He continued, "Some seniors also commute to work, so it is not easy to distinguish, but please look into ways to place some limits on those who are going out for leisure or just for a stroll."
He went on to say, "The Ministry of Health and Welfare will probably need to be involved as well, so let us study this together," to which Minister of Health and Welfare Chung Eun-kyung replied, "We will review it together."
His remarks came as part of a report on measures to promote public transportation use and adjust commuting hours as an energy-saving initiative. Earlier, Minister of Environment Kim Sung-hwan reported, "If we temporarily adjust commuting hours to spread out transportation demand, it will have an energy-saving effect."
