[Financial News] Jeong Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, on the 23rd called on former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea Kim Boo-kyum to "run as the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Mayor of Daegu."
At an on-site Supreme Council meeting in Bongha Village in Gyeongnam Province that day, Jeong said, "This local elections will be a turning point to realize the spirit of Roh Moo-hyun, who stressed overcoming regionalism by saying that if something is accepted in Gwangju, it should also be accepted in Busan," explaining his appeal.
He argued, "Daegu–Gyeongbuk needs strong leadership to drive a new leap forward," adding, "There is no leader better suited than Kim Boo-kyum to promote national unity and the development of Daegu. He is a sure winning card."
Jeong went on, "Former Prime Minister Kim served as Minister of the Interior and Safety and as Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, and as a Member of the National Assembly from Daegu, he understood and put into practice the tasks of overcoming regionalism and achieving balanced development. The Democratic Party of Korea has repeatedly and earnestly made three sincere requests for him to work for regional development," stressing, "He is an indispensable figure for the region’s future. I sincerely ask former Prime Minister Kim to make a prompt decision in response to the earnest wishes of local residents."
Kim Boo-kyum, who served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea in the Moon Jae-in administration, is expected to decide within this week whether he will be running for Daegu mayor. Cho Seung-rae, Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Korea, said at a press briefing at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea on the 22nd, "With Daegu–Gyeongbuk integration having fallen through, we need someone who can draw out new growth momentum, resolve key pending issues, and communicate directly with the President of the Republic of Korea and the central government with both authority and competence," adding, "We are considering former Prime Minister Kim as the right person to effectively address major issues in the Daegu region, which is why we are carefully weighing this option."
