[Financial News New York City = Reporter Lee Byung-chul] U.S. President Donald Trump warned on the 21st (local time) that unless the Islamic Republic of Iran fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, the United States of America (U.S.) will devastate Iran's power plants. The message was effectively a "final ultimatum" to Iran, which has responded to military strikes by the U.S. and the State of Israel by blocking the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that "if the Islamic Republic of Iran does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz to all traffic without any threat within 48 hours from now, the United States will attack Iran's various power plants, starting with its largest facilities, and wipe them out without a trace." By saying this, he made it clear that targets could extend beyond ordinary military installations to include critical infrastructure such as power plants. Some observers interpreted the warning as aimed at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, Iran's only nuclear power station.
The remarks came just a day after Trump suggested an exit strategy by saying he was "considering a phased reduction of military operations." Analysts say Trump is employing his characteristic strategy of gaining leverage through pressure, yet the risk of military clashes over strategic and energy facilities and other key infrastructure has pushed tensions to a dangerous level.
With Trump's time-limited, ultimatum-style warning, the war appears to be heading toward further escalation. The Islamic Republic of Iran has shown no sign of accepting Trump's "final ultimatum."
