According to Financial News, President Lee Jae-myung said on the 22nd that he had ordered Cheong Wa Dae and the cabinet to exclude multiple-home owners, non-resident owners of high-priced homes, and those holding excessive real estate from the processes of discussing, drafting, reporting on, and approving housing and real estate policies.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter) the same day, Lee stated, "Escaping from a 'real-estate republic' is one of the core tasks among the core tasks for a great transformation of the Republic of Korea," adding, "There must not be even a 0.1% defect or loophole in real estate or housing policy."
Lee stressed, however, that "there is no reason to condemn multiple-home owners, non-resident owners of homes held for investment or speculative purposes, or ultra-high-priced homes themselves." He continued, "The problem lies with public officials who designed tax, financial, and regulatory policies to favor those who own more homes and to drive up housing prices," and added, "If public officials who created or tolerated such systems then exploited them for speculation, they deserve not only criticism but also sanctions."
He went on, "From now on, it is reasonable to exclude these people from the process of formulating real estate and housing policy," emphasizing, "Real estate, especially stabilizing housing prices, will determine the success or failure of this administration and the fate of the Republic of Korea."
Lee also remarked, "You need a home to run a household, to get married, and to have and raise children," and added, "We must not turn countless people into snails without shells, just to enrich a few. What do you think?"
