Interior and Safety Minister Yun Ho-jung on the 20th ordered the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCHQ) to be activated immediately at 7:30 p.m. in response to a fire that occurred at about 1:17 p.m. at an auto parts manufacturing plant in Daedeok District, Daejeon. The blaze has left many people injured, and a significant number of individuals remain unaccounted for. In response, the government has put in place a strong, pan-government response system.
Minister Yun called on relevant agencies and local governments to work closely together to prevent further casualties and stop the damage from spreading. He also stressed that, given the risk of the building collapsing, special attention must be paid to the safety of rescue personnel working on site. The government plans to do its utmost in recovery efforts and support for the victims.
Immediately after the fire broke out, the National Fire Agency (NFA), Daedeok District, and other related organizations quickly coordinated to carry out firefighting, search, and rescue operations. The injured have been transported to nearby hospitals.
Minister Yun is scheduled to chair a meeting of the CDSCHQ at the scene. Officials from the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL), the NFA, the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA), Daejeon Metropolitan City, Daedeok District, and other related bodies will attend to discuss measures for handling the aftermath of the accident.
