[Financial News] The former co-pilot in his 50s accused of killing an airline captain said, "I did what I had to do against unfair vested interests."
Suspect A appeared at the Busan District Court on the afternoon of the 20th for a pretrial detention hearing to determine the validity of his arrest warrant.
Arriving in front of the Busan District Prosecutors' Office at around 1:35 p.m. that day, A told reporters, "I did what I had to do against those unfair vested interests that arbitrarily destroy a person's life just because it does not suit their taste."
A is accused of killing B, a captain in his 50s from the same airline, at an apartment in Busanjin District in Busan at around 5:20 a.m. on the 17th.
He is also suspected of attempting to strangle to death another domestic airline captain, identified as C, at around 4:40 a.m. on the 16th, but failing due to strong resistance. That case was transferred from the Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency and will be investigated in Busan.
After the crime, A headed to Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, where D, his next intended victim, lives. At the time, however, D was under police protection by the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency. Judging that it would be difficult to carry out the attack, A then went to Ulsan Metropolitan City, where he was arrested.
While being escorted by police, A told reporters, "I prepared for three years," and explained his motive by saying, "I did what I had to do because my life was ruined by the unfair vested interests of the Korea Air Force Academy." When asked how many people he had planned to kill, he replied, "Four."
A also told police that he had prepared for the crimes over three years targeting four people. It was confirmed that for several months he had followed them, collecting detailed information such as their home addresses, commuting times, and daily routes.
Although the exact motive has not yet been fully established, A is known to have had conflicts while working as a co-pilot at the same airline as B and C, and to have voluntarily resigned from the company two years ago.
