[Financial News] Pearl Abyss' new open-world action-adventure title "Crimson Desert," which has been seven years in the making, was officially released on the 20th.
However, as some gaming media delivered harsher-than-expected reviews of Crimson Desert, Pearl Abyss shares hit the lower price limit in the stock market the previous day.
Now that players can finally get their hands on the game after its full release, attention is on whether the "below expectations" verdict can be overturned.
According to the game industry on this day, the Metascore for "Crimson Desert" on Metacritic, disclosed on the morning of the previous day, came in at 78. Metacritic aggregates average scores given by professional outlets worldwide for games and films, and is widely used as a barometer of a game's quality and commercial prospects.
Global blockbuster titles typically receive Metascores in the 80–90 range or higher.
On Metacritic, several outlets praised Crimson Desert for its technical polish and the sheer volume of content. In contrast, others pointed to a relatively weak narrative, clunky controls, and overly complex content design, giving it scores in the 60–70 range.
Disappointment over the lower-than-expected scores sent Pearl Abyss' share price down 19,600 won from the previous session, closing at the limit-down price of 46,000 won.
Crimson Desert has been regarded as one of this year's most anticipated titles and has drawn global attention.
Within the industry, "Crimson Desert" has been cited as a key title for gauging how far Korean game companies can expand into the console and PC markets, while Pearl Abyss is in urgent need of a new hit to follow "Black Desert Online."
Due to the prolonged development period, production costs for Crimson Desert alone are reported to have reached around 200 billion won.
