[Financial News] "I rode a Hyundai Motor Company self-driving vehicle in the United States and test-drove Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) (FSD) in Korea, and they felt the same. In fact, Hyundai was even smoother."Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Yoon Hu-deok, speaking at a National Assembly forum on strategies for self-driving and robotics on the 19th, compared the autonomous driving features of Hyundai Motor Company and Tesla. He stressed that Hyundai’s self-driving performance and ride comfort were impressive.
At the first seminar of the 2026 National Assembly Mobility Forum, hosted at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building on the 19th by the parliamentary research group National Assembly Mobility Forum and organized by Korea Automobile & Mobility Association (KAMA), Yoon gave a positive assessment of the growth potential of Korea’s self-driving industry.
Yoon said, "I attended the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this January and test-rode a self-driving vehicle from Motional, which is a joint venture with Hyundai Motor Company. When we drove around Las Vegas, the ride was incredibly smooth," adding, "After experiencing it, I felt there is no choice but to move in this direction of self-driving."
He continued, "After returning home, I test-drove a Tesla vehicle equipped with FSD in Korea with my aides, driving a route from the National Assembly to Yeonnam-dong and back. It felt just like riding in the Hyundai vehicle in the U.S.," emphasizing again, "Hyundai Motor Company was smoother."
Yoon noted that Korea is also moving to support the sector, for example by designating Gwangju Metropolitan City as a self-driving demonstration city. "I believe all cars will eventually evolve toward FSD," he said. "Even if we are currently a bit behind the United States and China in self-driving, I think we will overtake them within a year."
Yoon pledged, "In the mobility field, the government is working hard, academics are working hard, and companies are working hard, and the National Assembly will also work hard," adding, "On institutional and regulatory issues, the ruling and opposition parties will study them together and resolve what is problematic."
People Power Party (PPP) lawmaker Bae Joon-young remarked, "The entire country is in a situation where everyone is fighting to strengthen automotive competitiveness," and added, "The National Assembly must step up to bolster the competitiveness of the auto industry and to secure our future."
KAMA Chairman Jeong Dae-jin pointed out, "Lawmakers will visit CES and also see many things in China, but when you look at the actual state of self-driving in the United States and China, you cannot help but be shocked," adding, "Hyundai Motor Company is doing very well in robotics, but if you look at the global robotics industry, China dominates the top ranks."
Jeong urged, "If we are to continue securing leadership in this field, the National Assembly, the government, and industry must stay alert and respond," and stressed, "We also need to ease regulations to enable investment and technology development in self-driving and robotics."
