BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan), widely hailed as the "Beatles of the 21st century," will return on the 20th with a new full-group album, "Arirang." It has been about three years and five months since they closed out their first chapter at the World Expo 2030 Busan Korea Concert BTS
Their return, after a hiatus due to mandatory military service, is more than just a comeback. It marks the opening salvo of what they call "Chapter 2."■ ‘Arirang’: Blending Tradition and Global AppealThe fifth studio album "Arirang" is their first new release in three years and nine months since the anthology album "Proof" in June 2022, and their first full-length studio album in about six years since "Map of the Soul: 7" in 2020. With "ON," the title track of their fourth album, they declared they would "bring the pain, oh yeah" and face hardship head-on. They weathered the COVID-19 crisis through online concerts, and their first English-language single "Dynamite" became a massive hit, propelling them into global pop stardom.
Released after solo projects and a military hiatus, "Arirang" has already proven the anticipation surrounding it, surpassing 4.06 million pre-orders and 4 million pre-saves on Spotify even before its release. The number of Weverse membership subscribers also nearly tripled following the album and tour announcements, once again underscoring the strength and cohesion of the fandom.
The album features 14 tracks in total, including the title track "SWIM." "SWIM" is an upbeat alternative pop track that carries the message of "keeping on swimming forward" without stopping, even amid the waves of life. RM took part extensively in writing the lyrics, while Bang Si-hyuk served as executive producer. B-sides such as "Body to Body," "Hooligan," "Aliens," "2.0," "Normal," and "Like Animals" capture the energy of live performance, the narrative of their global activities, and stories about the group’s evolution and relationships.
Global producers such as Diplo, Ryan Tedder, and Mike Will Made-It, who have worked with Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Adele, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Kendrick Lamar, also took part in the project. Diplo stoked anticipation by saying, "This album is absolutely insane."
In recently released content, the members expressed their determination to enter a new phase, saying, "Trends keep changing, so we can’t just keep doing the same thing," and, "If we’re going to change, it has to be now."
J-Hope noted, "You can really feel how much we’ve grown, since each of us has come back after doing our own music." Jimin of BTS added confidently that it is "a perfect album to kick off 'BTS Chapter 2.'"
Critics see this album as a turning point where identity and change intersect. Lee Jae-won, a visiting professor in the Culture and Technology Convergence Major, Sungkyunkwan University, observed, "From their early days, BTS members have written their own lyrics, sincerely reflecting the concerns of young people. 'SWIM,' which RM helped write, also conveys a determination to ride the coming currents at their own pace, and is likely to give hope to young people."
He added, "What is particularly noteworthy is that they put 'Arirang' front and center as a key motif, highlighting a uniquely Korean color, while also bringing in star producers from the United States to deliver pop with a global sensibility." He interpreted this as "a strategy that both consolidates their position as a global band representing Korea and keeps in mind their next goals in the U.S. market, including the Grammys."
Music critic Kim Seong-hwan commented, "You can sense a clear intent to fuse traditional Korean identity with BTS’s modern sound. It is an attempt to embrace the twin pillars of 'K' and 'pop'." He added, "As a group that has reached the very top of K-pop history, there is also an awareness that they must live up to that status."■ A New Wave That Extends into a World TourHYBE has described the album as a work that captures both the group’s identity and the universal emotion of "deep love." The global campaign "What Is Your Love Song?" is designed to help listeners feel the album’s emotional core by recalling the songs that have accompanied their own lives. Here, a "love song" means not just a romantic track, but any song of memory that offers comfort and strength.
This concept also ties into the "BTS THE CITY ARIRANG SEOUL" project unfolding across Seoul. Running from the 20th to April 19, "THE CITY SEOUL" uses the album’s key color, red, to turn the entire city center into a stage. Major programs include media façades at Sungnyemun Gate (Namdaemun) and N Seoul Tower, as well as a drone show at Ttukseom Hangang Park.
Starting with their comeback concert at Gwanghwamun on the 21st, BTS will continue global promotions, including an appearance in New York City on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). They will then embark on a world tour of 82 shows in 34 cities, beginning in Goyang and spanning North America, Europe, and beyond. Shows in North America and Europe are already sold out, and additional dates have been confirmed in some regions. In El Paso, Texas, and Baltimore, they will become the first Korean artists to hold solo stadium concerts, and at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium they set a record for the highest seat occupancy in the venue’s history, performing to around 120,000 fans.
The tour will also expand into live cinema screenings. The concerts in Goyang on April 11 and Tokyo on April 18 are scheduled to be broadcast in about 3,800 theaters across more than 80 countries and regions worldwide.
