] President of the United States Donald Trump said he does not need support from allies for military operations against Iran. Most member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have expressed opposition to taking part in the war, prompting speculation that he may have adjusted his strategy. He also stressed that help from countries such as South Korea and Japan is unnecessary.
President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social on the 17th (local time), "Because we have achieved military success, we no longer need or want the support of NATO member countries." He then emphasized, "The same goes for Japan, Australia and South Korea." He added, "As President of the United States of America (U.S.), the most powerful country in the world, I can say that we do not need anyone's help!" His comments came in response to NATO allies signaling they would not join the military operation against Iran.
Trump wrote on Truth Social, "I have been informed by most NATO allies that they do not wish to be involved in our military operation against the terrorist regime in Iran." He went on to complain that the U.S. has spent hundreds of billions of dollars every year to protect NATO members, saying, "We will protect them, but they will do nothing for us, especially when it is needed." His remarks have fueled speculation that his "Hormuz coalition" initiative may be shifting. Observers say he may move away from pushing that plan and instead demand other forms of support.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said at a bilateral meeting with the Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland) at The White House that NATO members who rejected his request to send forces to the Strait of Hormuz were "making a very foolish mistake."
He continued, "For a long time I have questioned whether NATO would really stand up for us," adding, "This has been an excellent test." He also said, "What is very important, in my view, is that we did not need to step up for Ukraine."
