According to The Financial News, a man who tried to buy gasoline, saying he would pour it on a building after losing money while gaming, has been taken into police custody.
On the 19th, Seoul Songpa Police Station stated that it had arrested a man in his 50s, identified only as A, and is reviewing whether to charge him on suspicion of preparing to commit arson on a building.
In the early hours of the 17th of last month, A called a gas station in Songpa District, Seoul, and asked, "Is it possible to buy gasoline to pour on a building?" The gas station employee found this suspicious and reported him to the police.
After receiving the report, police issued an all-points bulletin and searched the area around the gas station, eventually arresting A at a nearby PC room.
Through closed-circuit (CC) TV footage, officers confirmed that A had moved into an alley behind the gas station and did not reappear. They then reportedly conducted an intensive search focusing on nearby motels and PC rooms.
The investigation found that A was not intoxicated. He had been playing a game, lost money, and in a fit of anger inquired about buying gasoline. However, the attempt did not lead to an actual purchase.
A police official said, "So far we have only confirmed that he attempted to purchase gasoline, so we are carefully reviewing, from a legal standpoint, whether the charge of preparing to commit arson can be applied."
