[Financial News] Oh Se-hoon, mayor of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, who has been put on trial for allegedly asking political broker Myung Tae-kyun to conduct an illegal opinion poll and ordering that the costs be paid on his behalf, warned that he will file a criminal complaint against the special counsel team investigating First Lady Kim Keon-hee, led by Special Prosecutor Min Jung-ki, for the crime of distorting the law.
On the 18th, before appearing for a hearing in his political funds violation case before Criminal Division 22 of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Cho Hyung-woo, Oh told reporters, "This crime of distorting the law was created to cover up this administration’s wrongdoing, but I am considering filing a complaint for the crime of distorting the law against the special counsel for Kim Keon-hee."
Oh continued, "Special Prosecutor for Kim Keon-hee, an egregious prosecutor who did not indict Mr. Myung and Ms. Kang Hye-kyung, who fully confessed to the fraud, and instead indicted only the victims of the fraud, must be punished," adding, "If there is to be a first case where the crime of distorting the law is applied, it should be Special Prosecutor Min, who reversed victims and perpetrators."
He went on, "At the last hearing, Ms. Kang took the stand as a witness and admitted in court that large-scale opinion polls had been manipulated on multiple occasions, confessed to these fabricated facts, and said she would accept punishment," and added, "Despite this, they did not indict Mr. Myung and Ms. Kang, who are now denying even their participation in the fraud and spinning lies, and instead sent the case down to the police to drag things out. As for me, a victim of the fraud, they indicted me right on schedule so that the timing would line up exactly with the election period, forcing me to stand trial during the campaign. This special counsel must be punished."
He also said, "The reason I am agonizing over whether to file a complaint is that even if I accuse them of the crime of distorting the law, the investigation will still be handled by law enforcement agencies under this administration," adding, "That is what troubles me. But in light of how this trial has proceeded, I am determined to ensure that the atrocities committed by the special counsel for Kim Keon-hee are judged by the law."
Oh is accused of having received, on ten occasions between January 22 and February 28, 2021, both published and unpublished opinion polls related to the Seoul mayoral by-election from Myung, and of having businessman Kim Han-jung pay the related costs on his behalf. The special counsel team believes that Oh contacted Myung through his then chief of staff, former Seoul vice mayor for political affairs Kang Cheol-won, received the polling results, and then asked Kim to pay a total of 33 million won into an account held by Kang, deputy director of the Future Korea Research Institute, which Myung effectively controlled.
