[The Financial News] A report has emerged that Mojtaba Khamenei, who has become Iran's new Supreme Leader, narrowly survived a missile strike because he had stepped out into the front yard of his residence at the time of the air raid.
On the 17th, The Daily Telegraph reported, citing an audio recording from a senior insider in Iran, that Khamenei had been walking in the yard during the United States of America (US) and Israel's air strike on Tehran on the 28th of last month.
The outlet said the recording is of Mazaher Hosseini, chief of protocol for Khamenei, describing the circumstances of the bombing at a meeting of senior clerics and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders held near Tehran on the 12th, and that this audio was leaked.
According to The Daily Telegraph, which translated the recording into English, Khamenei was killed while gathered with senior security officials for a meeting at the time of the air strike. Mojtaba's wife and son were also staying in the residential compound and died on the spot.
The recording features an agitated male voice speaking for three minutes and 40 seconds, and The Daily Telegraph added that it had independently verified the audio.
In the recording, Hosseini says, "When the missile hit the building, he had been outside and was on his way upstairs," adding, "His wife, Zahra Haddad-Adel, was killed on the spot. Mojtaba sustained a leg injury in the incident."
Three ballistic missiles struck the area around the Khamenei family's residence and office at 9:32 a.m. that day. According to the account, Mojtaba had left the house just a few minutes earlier "to do something."
The bombing killed six members of his family, including his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as commanders of the IRGC and other military officers.
These reports have surfaced amid rampant speculation about Mojtaba's condition, as he has not appeared in person in public even after being chosen as Iran's new Supreme Leader on the 8th.
On the 12th, he issued his first official statement through Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, but it was read out by a news anchor. His voice and image were not shown at all, so rumors that he was seriously injured or otherwise in poor condition have not subsided.
There have also been unconfirmed reports that Mojtaba secretly flew to Moscow on a Russian military aircraft to undergo surgery on the leg he injured in the air strike.
According to British tabloid The Sun and other outlets, State of Kuwait-based media Al-Jarida reported the previous day that Mojtaba had successfully undergone surgery in Moscow at the suggestion of Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.
However, The Sun and other foreign media noted that they had not independently verified Al-Jarida's report, which was based on anonymous sources.
