[The Financial News] The People Power Party (PPP) on the 17th submitted a party-sponsored special prosecutor bill to investigate allegations of pressure to cancel President Lee Jae-myung’s indictment.
On this day, the PPP filed the "Special Prosecutor Act to Investigate Allegations of Pressure and Backroom Dealings over the Cancellation of the Indictment in President Lee Jae-myung’s Criminal Case" with the bill office of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea.
The controversy over alleged pressure to cancel the indictment first surfaced on the 12th through YouTube content hosted by broadcaster Kim Ou-joon. The allegation is that a close aide to President Lee Jae-myung sought to trade the cancellation of Lee’s indictment for preserving the prosecution’s authority to conduct supplementary investigations.
At a general meeting of PPP lawmakers on the 12th, Floor Leader Song Eon-seok stated, "We will push, as the party’s official position, for a special prosecutor to investigate suspicions of a backroom deal between the cancellation of President Lee Jae-myung’s indictment and the prosecution’s investigative authority."
He argued, "If these suspicions turn out to be true, it would be an abuse of state power in which a key national policy — the prosecution’s investigative authority — was traded away just to erase the criminal acts of President Lee as an individual," adding, "If it is true that instructions were given to senior prosecution officials, then the Minister of Justice is nothing more than President Lee’s personal attorney."
