On the 17th, the Cyber Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) announced that it had sent a Korean man in his 20s, identified only as A, to prosecutors without detention on charges of making threats against the public.
He is accused of having posted an English-language bomb threat on the message board of the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport website on March 20 last year.
Police said they received a request for investigative assistance from the U.S. investigative agency HSI in January and, through a joint international investigation, apprehended A.
Police stressed that offenses involving threats against the public are serious crimes that fuel anxiety among citizens and disrupt public safety systems, and vowed a stern response.
They added that, in particular, they plan to take strong measures, including arrest and detention, against threatening posts related to large-scale concerts and events, even if they are claimed to be mere pranks.
A police official stated, "We will continue to pursue and arrest those responsible through cross-border investigations, including international cooperation, whether they are in Korea or overseas."
