[The Financial News] Chinese tourists who were snorkeling in Malaysia reportedly rescued a Korean woman who was on the verge of drowning.
According to local media including Zhonghua Net on the 12th (local time), four Chinese tourists rescued a Korean woman who had fallen into the water on the 9th near Sapi Island in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah State, Malaysia.
At the time of the accident, a Chinese woman surnamed Meng was snorkeling with her companions when she heard someone cry out, "Help me." Looking around, she saw a Korean woman without a life jacket being swept by the waves into deeper water and sinking rapidly.
Meng and one of her companions immediately reached out, grabbed the woman by the waist, and tried to pull her up. However, the strong waves kept dragging the woman down, and the two rescuers swallowed seawater several times and began to lose strength.
Meng recalled, "After pulling for quite a while, both of us were almost exhausted," and added, "We had no choice but to raise our hands in the water and call for help. I swallowed seawater as I was being dragged by the girl, and I could hear her repeatedly shouting, 'It's dangerous.'"
At that moment, two male companions arrived and, together with rescue personnel, managed to pull the woman onto the boat. Meng, who was already drained of energy, reportedly insisted that the woman be taken to shore before herself.
Meng said, "I thought that because I was wearing a life jacket, I would just drift away slowly," and added, "It was only later, when I realized there were not many people in that area, that I became scared."
She went on, "It was my first time snorkeling, and I'm not good at swimming, so I was very scared," but added, "Because it was a precious life, I believe anyone would have helped." She later learned through a tour guide that the woman had made a full recovery.
