[The Financial News] Nvidia Corporation is dramatically expanding its partnerships with global automakers, including Hyundai Motor Company, as it moves to seize the lead in the autonomous vehicle (AV) market.
On the 16th (local time), Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) reported that Nvidia Corporation announced at its annual developer conference, GTC, in San Jose, California, that it has entered into autonomous driving technology partnerships with established automakers such as Hyundai Motor Company, Nissan Motor and Isuzu Motors, as well as Chinese carmakers BYD Company Limited (BYD) and Geely Automobile.
At the heart of these collaborations is the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion autonomous driving platform. The system supports the development and deployment of "Level 4" autonomous driving capabilities, which allow vehicles to operate without driver intervention under certain conditions.
Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia Corporation, expressed confidence, saying, "After researching autonomous vehicles for a long time, we have finally reached the 'ChatGPT moment' for self-driving."
He added, "We now know that autonomous driving can be achieved successfully, and I am pleased to announce four new partners that will help accelerate the era of the robotaxi."
Nvidia Corporation’s autonomous driving strategy goes far beyond simply supplying chips.
The company offers an end-to-end platform that covers AI training and large-scale simulation in data centers, as well as in-vehicle computing.
The autonomous driving industry has gone through many twists and turns. Waymo LLC, a subsidiary of Google LLC’s parent company Alphabet Inc., is leading the field, while Tesla, Inc. and Amazon’s Zoox are chasing behind.
By contrast, Cruise LLC, once a frontrunner backed by General Motors (GM), has incurred losses of more than 10 billion dollars (about 15 trillion won) following a pedestrian accident in San Francisco and halted its robotaxi operations for 2024.
For Nvidia Corporation, autonomous driving is seen as one of its most powerful growth engines outside of general AI. Industry experts expect the company’s expanded partnerships to inject fresh momentum into a self-driving market that had been in a slump.
