[The Financial News] A well-known food processing company in China has been found using hydrogen peroxide as a bleaching agent in the processing of chicken feet.
China Central Television (CCTV) aired footage of the production site at a chicken feet processing plant in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in its exposé program "CCTV 3.15 Gala," broadcast on the 15th to mark Consumer Rights Day.
According to CCTV, the chicken feet processed by this company are popular products sold both online and offline, as well as in specialty snack shops. In the released video, the factory, reeking of a foul odor, has wastewater pooled on the floor, with piles of chicken feet left directly on the wet ground.
The footage also shows brooms, shovels, and other cleaning tools placed on top of the chicken feet while work continues. Workers were seen picking up chicken feet that had fallen on the floor and putting them straight back into the processing containers.
The most troubling scene came during the processing stage. The chicken feet were soaked in hydrogen peroxide in a bleaching step to turn them white.
Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizing agent and disinfectant. When used in food processing, it not only destroys nutrients such as proteins, but long-term consumption can also damage the oral mucosa and cause liver and kidney dysfunction. Its use in food is banned in China.
CCTV reported, "Evidence of bleaching chicken feet with hydrogen peroxide was found not only at this company, but also at another food producer in Chongqing," conveying the position of the Chinese authorities.
The Chinese authorities have launched a large-scale crackdown on the companies involved. They have seized hundreds of boxes of problematic products and are investigating whether hydrogen peroxide was used and other possible violations.
