[Financial News] The film 'The King's Warden' has also crossed the 13 million viewer mark.
On the 15th, distributor Showbox announced via social media that 'The King's Warden' had surpassed a cumulative audience of 13 million as of 9 a.m.
Among Korean releases that have drawn over 10 million moviegoers, 'The King's Warden' has overtaken the records of 'The Thieves' (2012, 12.98 million viewers), 'Miracle in Cell No. 7' (2013, 12.81 million), and 'Assassination' (2015, 12.70 million), rising to 11th place on the all-time box-office chart. With only a narrow gap separating it from 10th-place 'The Host' (2006, 13.01 million viewers), it is expected to break into the all-time top 10 later today.
'The King's Warden' has become the eighth highest-grossing Korean film of all time. Among period dramas, it has surpassed 'Masquerade' (2012, 12.31 million viewers) and 'The King and the Clown' (12.30 million), making it the second highest-grossing period drama after 'The Admiral: Roaring Currents' (2014, 17.61 million).
Released on the 4th of last month, 'The King's Warden' surpassed 10 million viewers on the 31st day of its run, on the 6th. It went on to top 12 million on the 36th day, the 11th, and crossed the 13 million mark even before the weekend was over.
On the 14th alone, more than about 554,000 people watched the film, following around 221,000 on Friday the 13th, showing that its box-office momentum has not slowed even after passing the 10 million mark. As of the previous day, cumulative ticket sales revenue stood at roughly 125.3 billion won.
'The King's Warden', the first film by director Jang Hang-jun to reach 10 million admissions, tells the story of King Danjong of Joseon, portrayed as Yi Hong-wi (played by Park Ji-hoon), who is exiled to Yeongwol County. There, he spends the final chapter of his life among villagers, including the local headman Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hae-jin).
The film has been praised for its warm, affecting narrative, bolstered by standout performances from leads Park Ji-hoon and Yoo Hae-jin, as well as strong supporting turns by Yoo Ji-tae as Han Myeong-hoe and Jeon Mi-do as the court lady Maehwa.
On the 12th, director Jang Hang-jun held a coffee truck event at Seoul Madang in Jung District, Seoul, handing out coffee to citizens as a gesture of gratitude.
On the 17th, Jang Hang-jun and cast members Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, Kim Min and others will hold a stage greeting event to thank audiences for the film’s success.
