[Financial News] The presidential National Security Office stated that, in response to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) launching more than 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea from an area near Pyongyang on the 14th, it convened an "emergency security situation review meeting" attended by the Ministry of National Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), and other relevant agencies.
The National Security Office reviewed the impact of the launches on South Korea's security and examined the necessary response measures.
It also instructed the relevant agencies to maintain a heightened state of readiness, noting that the launches took place during the ROK–US combined military exercise.
In addition, it urged that "the DPRK immediately halt this ballistic missile launch, which is a provocative act in violation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions."
The National Security Office explained that it had reported the DPRK's launches and the corresponding measures to President Lee Jae Myung.
Meanwhile, the DPRK launched more than 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea on the same day. Intelligence authorities from South Korea and the United States (US) are analyzing the missiles' specifications, ranges, and other details.
This was the DPRK's first ballistic missile launch in 47 days, since it last fired missiles into the East Sea on January 27, and its third launch this year.
It is unusual for the DPRK to fire more than 10 missiles in a single salvo.
The launches drew even more attention because they came after United States (US) President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with Kim Jong Un, President of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea.
