According to The Financial News, Lee Jung-hyun, Nomination Management Committee Chairperson of the People Power Party (PPP), who announced his resignation just about 80 days before the June 3 Local Elections, has repeatedly stressed the need for strong reform, describing the PPP's current situation as being in a "coma".
In an interview with a media outlet on the 14th, Lee said this and added, "Then we have no choice but to resort to emergency measures," and, "Once I took on the role of head of the nomination committee, I wanted to put an electric shock device to its chest and make the heart beat again." He went on, "If the only way to save a party in a coma is an electric shock device, but I am not allowed to pick it up, then I have no choice but to leave. What other option is there?"
He was also reported to have expressed regret that his plans for reform-oriented nominations could not be carried out.
Lee said, "This was not some impulsive idea. I had drawn up a prescription for reform nominations based on innovative plans, analysis, and opinion polls, so it pains me deeply that things have turned out this way."
Meanwhile, after announcing his intention to step down as head of the nomination committee, Lee has stayed out of the public eye for a second day.
Having declared his resignation about 80 days before the June 3 Local Elections, he is said to have left the hotel near the PPP headquarters in Yeouido where he had been staying since his appointment as nomination chief last month, and is now staying outside Yeouido.
The PPP leadership has not accepted his resignation and is trying to contact him to persuade him to return, but those efforts have yet to succeed.
