NEW DELHI, India – Correspondent Pragya Awasthi – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the 12th to negotiate the safe passage of 28 Indian merchant ships stranded near the Strait of Hormuz due to the war in the Middle East.
According to local media reports on the 13th (local time), 28 Indian-flagged vessels are currently waiting to transit the Strait of Hormuz as military clashes in the region have intensified. Recently, several oil tankers and bulk carriers were attacked in the Persian Gulf, leaving three Indian sailors dead, one missing, and several others injured.
The Indian government has made vessel safety and energy security key agenda items and is maintaining diplomatic engagement with Iran on these issues.
Indian authorities stated, "For the past four to five days, Indian-flagged merchant ships have been unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz." However, a Liberia-flagged Suezmax oil tanker carrying crude from Saudi Arabia did manage to transit the strait and arrived in Mumbai on Thursday. It is the first vessel to reach India from West Asia since the latest tensions began.
