According to The Financial News, the People Power Party (PPP) on the 13th responded to allegations raised on broadcaster Kim Ou-joon's YouTube channel about a supposed "deal to drop the indictment" involving President Lee Jae Myung by stating that "if the backroom deal allegations are true, this is an extremely grave matter that would amount to grounds for impeaching the president." The party also signaled that it would move to submit an impeachment motion against Minister of Justice Jeong Seong-ho.
At the floor leadership strategy meeting held at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea that day, PPP parliamentary leader Song Eon-seok said, "On the 10th, reporter Jang In-soo, appearing on Kim Ou-joon's YouTube program, revealed that a senior government official, one of President Lee Jae Myung's closest aides, conveyed messages to multiple senior prosecutors asking them to drop the indictment."
He continued, "This means a key power broker personally moved to erase President Lee Jae Myung's trial by having the indictment withdrawn," adding, "If the backroom deal allegations are true, this is an extremely serious matter that would constitute grounds for impeaching the president."
Song went on to say, "When asked about the alleged deal to drop the indictment, Minister Jeong was reportedly flustered and mumbled that he had once told prosecutors, 'We must reflect on past wrongs and change,'" arguing, "This is effectively a self-admission that he made remarks exerting improper pressure, similar in nature to when he told them to 'make a prudent judgment' regarding the decision not to appeal in the Daejang-dong development scandal case."
He added, "Following the previous allegations that he pressured prosecutors not to appeal in the Daejang-dong case, this attempt to influence the dropping of the indictment clearly goes beyond the scope of a sitting minister's official duties and constitutes an abuse of power," stressing that it is "a sufficient reason to submit an impeachment motion against Minister Jeong."
