[Financial News] Police investigating the December 29 Jeju Air passenger plane disaster have launched a compulsory investigation into the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Special Investigation Team on the Passenger Plane Disaster announced that from 8:40 a.m. on the 13th it has been conducting a search and seizure at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The targets are four officials: two from the Air Navigation Satellite Policy Division, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and two from the Airport Operation Division.
The Special Investigation Team is said to be carrying out the raid to secure additional materials needed for the investigation.
Previously, the Special Investigation Team conducted search and seizure operations last month at two locations, including the Busan Regional Office of Aviation and a construction-related company.
Police initially booked 45 people in connection with the passenger plane disaster on charges including professional negligence resulting in death or injury, and have booked an additional 19 suspects since the Special Investigation Team was launched. This brings the total number of suspects related to the disaster to 64 so far.
In January, the National Office of Investigation reorganized the December 29 passenger plane disaster task force, which had been set up at the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency, into a Special Investigation Team directly under the head of the National Office of Investigation. The move came amid concerns raised during the parliamentary inquiry into the disaster about delays in the investigation, as well as the growing need to investigate not only the crash site but also related institutions and companies located in the Seoul metropolitan area.
