[Financial News] A U.S. military aerial refueling aircraft crashed in western Republic of Iraq while carrying out a military operation against the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran). The U.S. military stated that the incident was not caused by enemy action.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on the 12th (local time), "We confirm the loss of one Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker." The command added, "During Operation Epic Fury, a KC-135 tanker went down in friendly airspace, and search-and-rescue operations are under way."
The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is a strategic support aircraft that refuels fighters and bombers in the air. It plays a key role in long-range airstrike missions.
Recently, the United States has deployed additional fighters and support aircraft to the Middle East in response to military operations targeting Iran.
The crash involved two aircraft. One went down in western Iraq, while the other landed safely.
CENTCOM said of the cause, "It was not the result of enemy fire or misdirected friendly fire," adding, "We will release additional information as the situation develops."
Military authorities are currently conducting rescue operations for the crew at the crash site and investigating the circumstances of the accident.
