According to Financial News, Apple Inc. has not officially confirmed the launch of a foldable iPhone, but industry observers expect a tentative "iPhone Fold" to arrive as early as the second half of 2026. When unfolded, it is expected to offer a large screen that can be used like a tablet, along with technology that minimizes display creases. Analysts also predict a price tag of more than $2,000, or about 2.95 million won.
On the 13th, the information technology industry and U.S. IT outlet Engadget reported that Apple’s iPhone Fold could be unveiled this fall alongside the iPhone 18 series. If development proceeds as planned, mass production could begin in mid-2026. However, if issues arise with the hinge or display durability, the launch could be pushed back to 2027.
When unfolded, the device is expected to have a screen size of about 7.7 to 7.8 inches, making it similar to a small tablet like the 8.3-inch iPad mini. When folded, it will likely take the form of a regular smartphone with an external display of around 5.5 inches. The thickness is projected to be about 4.5 to 4.8 mm when open and around 9 to 9.5 mm when folded.
The biggest challenge is the crease that can appear on the display when the device is unfolded. Engadget predicted that Apple is likely to choose Samsung Display as its main panel supplier to address this issue. At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Samsung unveiled a foldable Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) panel that significantly reduces creasing. The panel combines a flexible OLED with a metal backing structure to disperse folding stress.
The camera setup is expected to include four units: two on the back, such as a main and an ultra-wide camera, plus a camera for the external display and an under-display camera on the inside. For biometric authentication, there is speculation that Apple may use Touch ID integrated into the power button instead of Face ID.
The hinge may use a metal-glass alloy known as liquid metal. This material is lighter yet more resistant to deformation than titanium, and is expected to help improve the durability of the foldable display.
Apple is reportedly testing high-density batteries with capacities in the 5,000 to 5,800 mAh range, which would make it the largest battery ever used in an iPhone. The device may also feature next-generation Apple A-series chipsets and Apple’s in-house C2 modem.
The price is expected to range from $2,000 to $2,500, or about 2.95 million to 3.7 million won, making it the most expensive iPhone in Apple’s history.
Engadget noted, "Apple has not officially disclosed the product name, final specifications, or software approach," adding, "Apple is taking its time to refine the device, and many elements could change before its release."
