According to Financial News, Jang Dong-hyeok of the People Power Party (PPP) stated on the 12th that he would ask the party’s Central Ethics Committee "not to discuss any additional disciplinary measures in all cases already referred to the committee until the local elections are over." His remarks respond to recent calls from the party’s reformist wing urging him to stop what they describe as "disciplinary politics."
Speaking at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea that day, Jang said, "This is the time for the People Power Party to unite as one and run hard for victory in the local elections."
Regarding the demand to halt Ethics Committee disciplinary actions, Jang explained, "This was discussed at the party caucus, and it is a measure to allow us to unite as one team and take the field together." He went on, "This is the time to join forces and fight together over issues such as the move to drop the indictment against President Lee Jae-myung, as well as the policy failures and authoritarian abuses of the ruling party," adding, "I urge party members to focus less on internal disputes and more on confronting the ruling party."
He continued, "I ask everyone holding party posts to refrain from commenting on internal disputes and personnel matters," stressing, "In the spirit of uniting solely for victory in the local elections, I once again earnestly ask you to concentrate your efforts on confronting the ruling party, criticizing the policy failures of the Lee Jae-myung administration, and informing the public about them."
In an effort to quell recent internal turmoil, the PPP recently adopted a "cutting ties with Yoon" resolution at its party caucus, declaring a break with Yoon Suk Yeol, former president of South Korea. Jang’s latest move is being interpreted as a follow-up step, effectively halting the purge of reformists within the party.
