[The Financial News] The film "The King's Warden," which has surpassed 10 million viewers and continues to be a box-office hit, is planning to revise the tiger computer-generated imagery (CGI) that had been pointed out as a blemish in an otherwise strong work.
On the 10th, the YouTube channel "Im Soo-yeon’s Baesanimsu" uploaded a video titled "How a film halted by COVID-19 reached 10 million viewers: the making of 'The King's Warden.'"
In the video, journalist Lim Su-yeon explained, "Because the release date was moved up from the original plan, there were parts where they didn’t have enough time to work," adding, "The response from the blind test screening was very positive, and they judged the film would be competitive in theaters over the Lunar New Year holidays, so they decided to release it earlier than scheduled."
She went on, "I hear the CGI team is still continuously revising the tiger scenes," and added, "A film doesn’t end with its theatrical run. There are secondary rights and releases on other platforms to come, so they are continuing the CGI work with those in mind."
"The King's Warden" has been praised for the cast’s performances and for its depiction of the final days of Danjong of Joseon. However, the tiger CGI that appears in several scenes has drawn criticism for its low level of completion.
Director Chang Hang-jun, who helmed the film, said in an interview before its release, "Time is the lifeblood of CGI. You need to work on it for several months," and noted, "Rendering the tiger’s fur alone takes an enormous amount of time, and we simply didn’t have enough time physically to make all the revisions."
Jang Won-seok, co-producer and head of BA Entertainment, likewise mentioned, "The release date was moved up from what we had originally planned," and said, "The blind test screening for general audiences received such a good response that the distributor decided to bring the release forward, and in that process we did not have sufficient time for post-production."
Actor Park Ji-hoon, who plays Danjong of Joseon, also appeared on tvN’s variety show "You Quiz on the Block" last month and recalled, "My older brother watched the film and told me, 'It was really great,'" but added that his brother also said "the tiger CGI was disappointing," referring to the reaction to the tiger CGI.
Regarding this, director Chang commented, "I’m just glad that people are only talking about the CGI. It’s better than having debates about the acting, the script, or historical distortion."
"The King's Warden" is a period drama set in 1457 in Cheongnyeongpo. It tells the story of village head Eom Heung-do, who chooses exile to revive his village, and the young former king Danjong of Joseon, who has been deposed and banished from the throne. The cast includes Yoo Hae-jin, Park Ji-hoon, Jeon Mi-do, and Yoo Ji-tae.
Meanwhile, "The King's Warden," which opened on the 4th of last month, surpassed 10 million viewers on its 31st day of release and continues its strong box-office run. As of the 9th, its cumulative audience stands at 11.7 million.
