China: "Iran’s new leader was chosen in line with its own constitution"

[The Financial News] The Chinese government stated that the recent decision by the Assembly of Experts in the Islamic Republic of Iran to select Mojtaba Khamenei, the younger son of Ali Hosseini Khamenei, as Supreme Leader of Iran was "a decision made by Iran in accordance with its own constitution."
On the 9th (local time), Guo Zhaokun made this comment at a regular press briefing when asked about China’s position on the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of Iran.
Guo said, "China opposes interference in other countries’ internal affairs under any pretext," and added, "The sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran must be respected."
He went on to stress, "China calls for an immediate halt to military actions and urges all parties to return to dialogue and negotiations in order to avoid further escalation of tensions."
Earlier, on the 8th (local time), the Assembly of Experts in the Islamic Republic of Iran elected Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of Iran. The Supreme Leader also serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces and holds final decision-making authority over all major state affairs. The position is also granted control over the country’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
