The Financial News reported that a wave of incidents has followed the recent craze for the Dubai Chewy Cookie, including allergic reactions and damage to teeth after consumption. In response, the Korea Consumer Agency (KCA) announced on the 8th that it has issued a consumer safety alert.
According to the KCA, a total of 23 injury reports related to the Dubai Chewy Cookie were filed with the Consumer Injury Surveillance System (CISS) in January and February this year.
By type of harm, allergic reactions after eating the product accounted for 11 cases (47.8%), the largest share. This was followed by five cases of digestive disorders (21.7%), four cases of tooth damage caused by foreign objects mixed into the product (17.4%), two cases of foreign objects being found (8.7%), and one case of oral bleeding due to a foreign object (4.4%).
The KCA also reviewed the online sales pages for 40 Dubai Chewy Cookie products currently distributed on the market. It found that more than half of the 40 sellers—27 in total—either provided insufficient information on allergens or omitted it entirely. In 35 cases, the best-before date was inadequately indicated, and 16 sellers failed to properly state the country of origin.
The KCA pointed out that the product is also actively traded on secondhand platforms. It cautioned that individuals are strictly prohibited under the Food Sanitation Act from manufacturing food for sale without a business license or reselling food products to others.
Accordingly, the KCA plans to prepare and distribute a notice outlining precautions for online sales of the Dubai Chewy Cookie to relevant sellers.
