[Financial News] Donald Trump, president of the United States of America (USA), who had previously voiced support for attacks by Kurdish armed groups in northern Republic of Iraq against the Islamic Republic of Iran, reversed his position on the 7th (local time), saying he does not want to get involved.
Speaking to reporters aboard the presidential aircraft Air Force One, Trump said, "I don’t want the Kurds going into the Islamic Republic of Iran," adding, "They want to go in, but I told them I don’t want them going into Iran."
He went on to say, "The war is already complicated enough as it is," and explained, "I don’t want to see Kurds injured or killed."
In a media interview on the 5th, Trump had discussed the possibility of Kurdish armed groups attacking the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying, "I think it would be a great thing if they wanted to do that" and "I fully support it."
Participation by Kurdish armed groups had been viewed as one option that would allow the USA to maintain the front lines without deploying its own ground troops. However, experts consistently warned that bringing yet another force into the conflict could increase uncertainty and the risk of further escalation.
