[Financial News] The People Power Party announced on the 7th that, in the nomination process for candidates in the upcoming June 3 local elections, it will actively consider granting single-candidate or priority nominations to contenders with high approval ratings.
Lee Jung-hyun, chair of the People Power Party’s central nomination committee, wrote on his social networking service (SNS) account that the party would "actively consider single-candidate recommendations or priority nominations for candidates whose personal approval ratings are significantly higher than the party’s support level, or whose performance during their term in office has been clearly proven and positively evaluated by local residents."
He added, "Above all, this round of nominations will be based on competitiveness and capability."
Lee also laid out the conditions for strategic nominations. He stated, "Taking into account the overall political landscape and electoral environment in each area, we may consider strategic priority nominations in regions where the party is weak, in strategically important constituencies, or in places where new approaches are needed for the party’s future."
He went on, "Conversely, in areas with many applicants, we will select the most competitive candidate through intense competition," stressing, "These nominations are not for any particular person, faction, or individual interest. They are solely for the people and for winning the election."
Lee also urged, "As we head into the local elections, there may be various opinions and debates within the party, but that process must not appear to the public as division or conflict."
