[The Financial News] Independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo, who is under suspicion over a 100 million won nomination bribe, is undergoing her first round of questioning since being taken into custody.
According to reporting by The Financial News on the 7th, the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) began questioning Kang at 10 a.m. that day. It comes four days after she was arrested on the 3rd.
Kang is accused of receiving 100 million won in a shopping bag from former Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kim Kyung at a hotel in Yongsan District in January 2022, ahead of the local elections. She faces charges of breach of trust under the Criminal Act, as well as violations of the Political Funds Act and the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act.
Police are required to refer the case to prosecutors within 10 days of placing a suspect under detention. In line with this deadline, investigators are expected to focus in Thursday’s questioning on whether Kang actually received the money and how it may be connected to the nomination process.
Kim Kyung claims, in substance, that Kang’s side first demanded the 100 million won. Kang, however, denies all the allegations.
Kim Kyung, who was arrested along with Kang on suspicion of handing over the 100 million won, was questioned for nearly 13 hours on the 5th.
