[Financial News] A Korean national who was filming a video at Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where operations had been suspended following airstrikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran by the United States of America (U.S.) and the State of Israel, was detained by airport police and later released.
According to Newsis and other outlets on the 6th, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Dubai announced in a notice that "late last night, a Korean national filming a commemorative video at Dubai International Airport was detained by airport police." The consulate general added, "We promptly contacted the Dubai Police Force, conveyed our citizen's apology for violating the relevant law, promised deletion of the video and prevention of recurrence, and after persistent persuasion the individual was finally let off with a warning and safely boarded the return flight."
The consulate general warned, "In the UAE, photography and video recording of certain facilities and buildings, such as government and security-related sites, as well as individuals, are strictly regulated for reasons including national security, maintenance of public order, and protection of personal privacy." It continued, "Violations may result in heavy penalties, including large fines, detention, imprisonment, deportation, and bans on re-entry."
The consulate general further explained that even when only a fine is imposed, an exit ban is enforced in parallel until the court issues its sentence and the fine is fully paid.
It also noted, "In the current tense atmosphere, police officers are stationed at government and security-related facilities, and if filming is observed, immediate arrest on the spot and severe punishment can be expected," urging, "We ask our citizens to exercise particular caution."
Meanwhile, 372 Korean nationals who had been stranded in Dubai returned home on Emirates flight EK322 that day. Emirates flight EK322 was the first direct flight between the UAE and Korea to resume operations after the U.S. and the State of Israel carried out airstrikes on the Islamic Republic of Iran, and 372 of the 422 passengers on board were reported to be Korean.
The government is reported to have coordinated the resumption of direct flights with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to help ensure the safe return of Korean nationals staying in the Middle East.
