[The Financial News] The film "The King's Warden" has surpassed 10 million moviegoers just 31 days after its release.
On the 6th, distributor SHOWBOX announced that as of 6:30 p.m. that day, cumulative admissions for "The King's Warden" had exceeded 10 million. It is the 34th film to reach this milestone among all releases in Korea, and the 25th Korean film to do so.
It is the first domestic release in two years to draw over 10 million viewers. Among historical drama films, it is the fourth to reach the 10-million mark, following "The King and the Clown," "Masquerade," and "Myeongnyang."
"The King's Warden" tells the story of the deposed Danjong of Joseon, Yi Hong-wi (played by Park Ji-hoon), who spends the final chapter of his life mingling with villagers in Gwangcheongol in Yeongwol County, Gangwon Province, where he has been exiled. With its moving narrative, the film dominated the domestic box office throughout the Lunar New Year and March 1 Independence Movement Day holidays.
Lead actors Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, along with Yoo Ji-tae as Han Myeong-hoe and Jeon Mi-do as the court lady Maehwa, have been praised for their highly immersive performances.
Director Jang Hang-jun, who debuted with "Break Out" in 2002, has joined the ranks of 10-million directors 24 years after his debut.
Actor Yoo Hae-jin has now become a five-time 10-million actor with "The King and the Clown," "Veteran," "A Taxi Driver," "Exhuma," and now "The King's Warden." Park Ji-hoon has become a 10-million actor with his very first film role.
Ahead of the film crossing the 10-million mark, Jang Hang-jun shared through SHOWBOX, "My family and I are delighted yet cautious about a situation I had never even imagined," adding, "I am deeply grateful for the many congratulatory messages we have received."
