After a court suspended the one-year suspension of party membership imposed on People Power Party lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin, reformist lawmakers demanded the resignation of Central Ethics Committee chair Yoon Min-woo, accusing him of having "acted as an attack dog for the pro-leadership faction."
Kim Jae-seop wrote on social media on the 6th, "Chair Yoon acted as an attack dog for the pro-leadership faction and took the lead in eliminating political rivals," adding, "Yoon, who tarnished the party's reputation with an unlawful disciplinary measure, must step down immediately."
He continued, "The court's decision that the Ethics Committee's disciplinary action clearly exceeded the bounds of the Constitution and the law, leaving no room for further debate, shows just how arbitrarily and selectively the committee has abused its authority," and added, "The body that should be upholding the party's moral discipline has instead become the main culprit in ignoring law and principle and plunging the party into conflict and chaos. On the eve of an election, the Ethics Committee chair has dragged the party into a quagmire; he should reflect and resign."
Cho Eun-hee, a member of the reformist group Alternative and Future, stated, "The Ethics Committee is the last bastion for setting the party's moral standards, but this incident has shown that it is being run arbitrarily and in a biased manner, beyond the bounds of the Constitution and the law," and pointed out, "Disciplinary actions that lack procedural legitimacy shake the very foundations of party democracy."
She went on, "If the Ethics Committee comes to represent the will of a particular faction or degenerates into a tool for eliminating political opponents, how can any citizen or party member trust its authority?" and wrote, "Chair Yoon and the committee members must resign immediately."
Kwon Young-jin, also a member of Alternative and Future, commented, "This is truly shameful and embarrassing. It is time to set things right," and added, "There should be no more foolish politics that hand over issues, which ought to be resolved through dialogue and politics, to disciplinary measures and court rulings."
Kwon stressed, "Leader Jang Dong-hyeok and the party leadership must immediately revoke the disciplinary action against Bae in accordance with the Ethics Committee regulations," and added, "Chair Yoon must apologize to party members and the public and show that he is taking responsibility himself."
Pro-Han faction lawmaker Park Jeong-hun urged leader Jang to dismiss Chair Yoon.
Park argued, "This situation was all but inevitable once leader Jang handed the sword to Chair Yoon Min-woo, who has claimed election fraud and pursued a pro–Kim Keon-hee line," and added, "By mobilizing the Ethics Committee to eliminate political rivals, they have created a disaster that is leading the party down the path of becoming an 'unconstitutional party.'"
