According to Financial News, the Samsung Electronics labor union will hold a strike action ballot starting on the 9th, with the goal of staging a general strike in May.
According to industry sources on the 6th, the Samsung Electronics Joint Struggle Headquarters of Labor Unions announced on the 5th that it will conduct a strike action ballot from the 9th to the 18th and aims to secure the legal right to strike by mid-month.
If more than half of all union members vote in favor and the right to strike is secured, the union plans to hold a general assembly of members before April and then push ahead with a general strike in May.
The Joint Struggle Headquarters stated, "With a general strike in May as our goal, we will continue to increase the number of participants in the industrial action and ratchet up the pressure on management."
Previously, in November last year, the Joint Struggle Headquarters formed a joint bargaining team that included the Samsung Electronics Branch of the Super-Enterprise Labor Union, the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union, and Samsung Electronics Union Donghaeng, and engaged in wage negotiations with management for about three months.
However, labor and management remained sharply divided over the abolition of the cap on performance bonuses. As a result, the union declared the breakdown of talks on the 19th of last month and filed for mediation with the National Labor Relations Commission.
At the second mediation session held on the 3rd, the National Labor Relations Commission decided to discontinue mediation. Following this, the union converted the joint bargaining team into the Joint Struggle Headquarters and moved to secure the right to strike.
