According to Financial News, the court has accepted an injunction request filed by People Power Party lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin, who challenged the disciplinary decision by the party’s Ethics Committee.
Civil Division 51 of the Seoul Southern District Court, presided over by Senior Judge Kwon Seong-su, announced on the 5th that it would suspend the effect of the one-year suspension of party membership imposed on Bae until a final ruling is reached in the main lawsuit she filed against the People Power Party.
With this decision, Bae temporarily regains her party membership and her position as head of the party’s Seoul chapter. As a result, she is now expected to be able to take part in the candidate nomination process for the June 3 local elections in the Seoul area.
After holding the first hearing on the 26th of last month, the court continued to review the case in writing, receiving arguments, rebuttal briefs, and other documents from both Bae and the People Power Party.
Previously, on January 13, the party Ethics Committee decided on a heavy disciplinary measure of a one-year suspension of party membership for Bae, who was then serving as head of the party’s Seoul chapter, over her posting of a photo of the underage child of an online user who had criticized her on social media without permission.
On January 20, when she filed for the injunction, Bae argued, "The local elections are just ahead," and continued, "Right before that, they tried to purge me from within the party by removing the head of the Seoul chapter, claiming that I was an inconvenience to the era of President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea and the leadership under Jang Dong-hyeok that they wanted to protect. I intend to correct that disciplinary action by relying on the power of the rule of law in the Republic of Korea."
