According to The Financial News, former baseball player Seung-hwan Oh revealed that the gold he received every time he set a record during his playing career adds up to about 1,000 don, leaving viewers stunned.
On the 4th, Seung-hwan Oh appeared on Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) variety show "Radio Star" together with Lee Cheol-min, Cho Hyun-ah, and Yang Sang-guk. He shared an update on his life, saying, "I went back to a rookie mindset and am now working as a commentator," as he has debuted as a baseball analyst.
When Yoo Se-yoon asked, "I heard you’ve been treating the emptiness after retirement with some financial therapy," Seung-hwan Oh began talking about the gold gifts he received whenever he retired from a team or achieved a major record.
Recalling his time with the Samsung Lions, where he wore jersey number 21, Seung-hwan Oh said, "I think 21 has become a very meaningful number for me. By coincidence, I even got married on the 21st, and I played professionally for 21 years." He went on, "Thanks to the number 21, when I retired, the Hanwha Eagles players had a 21-don gold padlock custom-made for me, and the Samsung Lions also made a gold trophy for me."
He added that when he set the record of 47 saves, he received a gold baseball worth 470 don, and when he reached 400 career saves, he was given a 400-don gold bar, astonishing everyone in the studio. When Yang Sang-guk asked, "So how many don of gold do you have at home in total?" Seung-hwan Oh replied, "I think it’s around 1,000 don."
According to Korea Gold Exchange, as of the 5th, the buy price for one don (3.75 g) of 24K pure gold is 1,067,000 won, and the sell price is 874,000 won. Based on current prices, Seung-hwan Oh is effectively holding about 900 million won worth of pure gold.
